Question
My mom is 89yrs old, good health, has had cataract surgery approx. 5 months ago, soon after her eye is teary. The Dr. prescribed some drops. This did not help. about a month ago I noticed she noticed swelling in the corner of her eye and cheek bone, also a bit painful. What do you suggest I do?
Thanks, Anna Addiego
Answer
Tearing (epiphora) and an area of tender swelling near the (inner?,
although you did not specify) corner of the eye near the cheekbone
might suggest blockage of the lacrimal canalicular system, which can
cause infection of the lacrimal sac (dacryocystitis). This would be
unrelated to her cataract surgery, but I would suggest she see an
ophthalmologist for the evaluation of the tear duct system.
