long term corneal scratch

Question
HI,

Our son got a corneal scratch on his eye about 1 1/2 yrs ago.  He has had blurred vision and sometimes triple vision ever since.  He isdragging his feet about getting any additional treatment.  The optometrist referred him to an opthamologist.  Is there any danger that he is suffering permanent damage?  He has learned to compensate. There is no pain.

Answer
Dear Susan,

After this long from the incident, he will have no symptoms like pain etc.

The cornea is a very sensitive structure and these cells do not grow back.

A mild scratch would heal on its own as it may involve only the 'skin' of the corena or epithelial cells.

It would certainly help to see a recent eye report.

Even optometrists are capable of knowing if something else needs to be done by their examination.

Hope this helps,

Best,

Dr Shroff
