failed cataract surgery

Question
Hello, my uncle has cataract due to diabetes and after having surgery on both eyes, at separate times, he almost has no vision left. I do not know the exact details, I recall there was eye infection involved after one of the surgeries. Generaly, can one have a second surgery to fix a previously failed intervention, at least for one eye?

Thank you, very much appreciated.

Answer
Dear Dani,

From the description, the problem does not seem to be because of the catarct lens 'gone bad'.

During cataract surgery, if there is infection, it can result in permanent vision loss as it affects the nerves of the eyes.

Hence, best way would be to know if he suffered from "endophthalmitis' which is the infection inside the eye. In such cases a second surgery does not help unless having a painful blind eye.

Other than this, if there is decreased vision, it could be a result of many factors and only after examining your uncle or seeing any recent eye report of his which you may e mail to info@shroffeye.org, can we guide you better.

Hope this helps,

Best,
