Eye test and driving

Question
Have recently had eye test and been given prescription -.75 -.5.  Been told that my vision has improved and that long-standing astigmatism has disappeared.

Is it possible that my vision has improved and astigmatism gone?

Do I need to wear glasses for driving with this prescription?

My previous prescription was:

-1 -1 Cylinder -.25 -.25 Axis 15 40

Answer
You had such a very small amount of astigmatism, it is entirely possible that it might not show up in any given exam, or it might be gone forever.  And yes, it is possible that your eyes got better - especially if you are in your late 30's or early 40's - then it is very common to lose a little nearsightedness.

As for whether you need to wear the glasses driving, it would certainly be better to do so - but as far as a legal answer, it would depend on the law in your state and what your actual acuity is.  In my state the law is that the person must see 20/40 out of the better eye to drive without glasses. With your Rx, you are probably right on the border of that so it could go one way or another.  Most likely the doctor who did your exam can supply this answer.
