Elongated Pupil(s)

Question
Today my eye exam revealed that I have elongated pupil(s).  My eye doctor said come see her right away if I see lots of floaters in my eyes.  Is this a common condition?  Something tells me that it is not common.  Do you have any advice to help me? Thank you.

Answer
Hi Nancy,

I would have thought you would have noticed your elongated pupils in the past as they are usually congenital.  Usually one funny shaped pupil needs to be explained and examined especially if due to injury but if the two are similar it's OK.  However, if the pupils are 'keyhole' shaped, or opened all the way to the edge (like missing at the bottom), it would be considered a form of a neural tube defect called an iris coloboma and can be associated with other structural defects in the eye, head,or body.  Usually iris colobomas are stable.  Either way, even if the pupils were normal, you would want to see your eye doctor if you had any sudden change in vision or suddenly noticed flashes of light or new floaters.

Hope that helps,
