SHRINKING EYE

Question
My Step-Son was taken to Childrens Hosp. in Phila yesterday c/o severe ha...there was no voimiting and no seizure involved. (there is a history of seizures)The neurologist told his Mother his eye was shrinking and that was the cause of ha.  He is not going for a CT until next Weds the 11th.  Can you add any insight on "shrinking eye"?  The only thing I see about it is detached retina. Thanks for your input.

Answer
Dear Sandy,

Very vague in absence of reports, but by just the details you mention, this could be possibly 'Phthisis Bulbi'.

This can happen because of a non functional eye, the eye pressure drops and the eyes then shrink. This can happen because of a detached retina if that is your question.

The retina is usually attached. The detachment has various reasons, like trauma, holes from a thinned out retina, or due to systemic causes which may need to be ruled out.

The details would be best known hrough a CT Scan.

The neurologist will guide best.

Hope this helps,

Best,

Dr Shroff
