Severe red dry eyes

Question
I have been dealing with chronic dry red eyes for about 10 to 11 years now. I am now 25 still having problems finding out why and finding something that truly works for me. I had been using a visine drop for allergies for 5 years. Worked pretty good up until last Oct.2008. The red got so bad I couldn't find a drop to help. So I went to a ophthalmologist and he thought it was because my eyes did not close all the way at night. Started to treat with ointment at night. It worked for a couple of days then went right back where I started. Then we started Restasis it seemed to work for a long time. Now its back again starting in October again. Severe red/dry eyes and nothing is working! They even itch quite a bit. I just got tear duct plugs inserted but I haven't noticed much of a difference. I'm just so frustrated! Do you have any suggestions?

Answer
Dear Brianne,

You seem to have tried all the routine treatment and also seem to be in the right hands as this would be the usual course of treatment.

If not under the care of a corneal specialist, then you could just make sure that you are seeing one.

Sometimes the causes are not just local, but something like systemic to do with hormonal insufficiency etc. so a good physician would also help.

Hope this helps,
