bulging eye

Question
Hi, I'm a 21 year old female. Last night I was taking out my contacts and i noticed that my left eye seemed to be bulging out a bit more than my right eye. My contact was bothering that eye during the day and i know i was rubbing it quite a bit. could this be the cause of my eye bulging, and if so will it go back to normal on its own, or should i get it looked at. It isn't bulging very much..i can just notice it if i'm touching my eye and there is no white in between my iris and my eyelid when i'm staring straight.

thanks

Lindsay

Answer
I would avoid use of your contact lenses tomorrow.  If the eye is still bulging the next day, and especially if there is any discomfort, then please do see an eye doctor.  Sometimes people think the eye is bulging if the lids are swollen, but there is also the less likely possibility of a thyroid problem - or worse yet, something (like a brain tumor) pushing out from behind your eye.

Before you get too concerned though, unless there is accompanying discomfort, I think you can afford to wait a day or two to see if it could just be related to irritation and swelling from the contact lenses.
