SCRATCHED EYE cornea

Question:

Husband scratched his Eye
My husband was messing with my head band trying to bend it back for me and it snapped and hit him in the eye, It has been hurting for him all day and he can't open his eye very long. It hurts when he blinks. I was wondering if there was anything a doctor could do about that, or anything we can just do about it.

Answer:
I guess by now that you've figured it out. He scratched his cornea, which is one of the most painful things you could imagine. The good news is that they heal fairly quickly by themselves. Goopy antibiotic EYE ointment can help keep the eye lid from hanging on the edges of the scratches when he blinks. That's why blinking hurts. The cornea is the layer that focuses light rays. When it is scratched it hurts for the cornea to react to light. That is why it hurts him to open his eye. A dark room is good; thick eye cream is good. Time is good. Make sure the ointment is fresh-check the date. Be sure it has not been hot; left outside in the car, or whatever. Ointments do go bad, and the last thing you want to do with a sracthed cornea is put rancid eye ointment on it. because the other thing the cornea does is to keep dirt and lint and foreign objects from getting to the eyeball itself. So keep away from dusty, windy places for a few days.
