Myopia

Question
One of my patient is having higher myopia ( Refractive error-11 numbers), age is 23 yrs, female.please insert you expert opinion about corrective treatment, either she should go for LASER or any lens insertion or anything else.

Answer
Extreme myopia in a younger patient would best be left untreated until there is relative certainty that the prescription is stable for 1-2 years.



The most desirable refractive correction would be with a phakic intraocular lens such as the Visian (Staar Surgical).



LASIK would be a second choice but would require adequate corneal thickness in order to safely perform the ablation and have a residual corneal thickness beneath the flap of at least 300 microns or more.
