MACULAR DEGENERATION

Question
Ken

Hi, My mom is in her 80's and has macular degeneration.  She is supposed to take special vitamins, but they eye vitamins have many different vitamins in them. What should I look for, does certain vitamins really work ?

Thanks

Ken

Answer
Vitamin therapy does NOT cure Macular degeneration , it merely slows the progression. The important ones are zeaxanthin, lutien, vitamin A, zinc, beta carotine . Also a diet rich in green leafy vegatables as lettuce, spinach, kale' asparagus, broccoli, has beed shown to improve ocular health. Recall that in 10% of cases, laser photocoagulation can help the "wet" type and in the "DRY" type, vitamins , exercise, sun protection, cessation of smoking and intraocular injections of VEG-F DRUGS  can help.  Ask your retinal specialists

Hope this helps..    Dr. Ken
